Angels Landing’ s popularity has led the National Park Service to implement a pilot permit program that limits the number of hikers who can access the narrow, exposed section beyond Scout Lookout. Every hiker must have a permit to continue past Scout Lookout to Angels Landing — no exceptions.

How Angels Landing Permits Work

Permits are not available in person or on the day of your hike; they are only obtained online via a lottery system through Recreation.gov .

There are two paths to securing a permit:

Seasonal Lottery
Open quarterly for entire seasons (e.g., March–May, June–Aug, etc.).
When you apply, you can choose up to seven preferred dates and time windows ranked by priority.
Fees: $6 non-refundable application fee (covers up to 6 people),$3 per person fee charged if issued a permit
Day-Before Lottery
If you don’t get selected in the seasonal lottery, there’s still hope.
Apply the day before you plan to hike.
The lottery opens at 12:01 AM MT and closes at 3 PM MT the day before.
Results are issued around 4 PM MT that same day.
For example: If you want to hike on a Wednesday, you need to apply between 12:01 AM and 3 PM MT on Tuesday. Permits will be issued at 4 PM MT on Tuesday.

What are my chances of winning an Angels Landing permit?

Although Zion National Park doesn't release official numbers on Angels Landing permits, they have shared that approximately 200,000 permits are issued annually, ranging from as few as a couple of hundred up to 1,000 per day. Your chance of winning a permit is best during off season (Dec-Feb) and on a weekday. Reportedly, your chance of winning a permit is about 50%, but on peak holiday weekends, it can drop to 8%.'

Permit Rules & What to Bring

Permits come with a few key requirements and recommendations:

You can list up to 6 people on a permit. A common misconception is that an issued permit grants you access to take 6 people, that is not the case you must indicate your party size at the time you enter the Angels Landing lottery.
Your permit is the confirmation email you get (not your receipt); print it or download it before hitting the trail.
Bring a matching photo ID because rangers may check permits and IDs anywhere along the hike.
Permits are not transferable and have to match the name on your ID.
After you've entered the lottery, you cannot:
Increase the number of people in your group
Change the date of your hike
Change the permittee (transfer the permit)
Change the alternate leader
Always practice Leave No Trace principles and stay prepared. This hike is strenuous and exposed.
There’s no drinking water on the trail; bring 2–4 liters per person.
Traction devices (like microspikes) are highly recommended in snow/ice conditions.

How to Get to the Angels Landing Trailhead

The hike starts at The Grotto or stop #6, which is accessible via the Zion Canyon Shuttle. Private vehicles are not allowed in Zion Canyon most of the year, so plan to use the shuttle system and allow extra time during busy seasons. Check here for current shuttle schedules.

How Hard is the Angels Landing hike?

There is no getting around the fact that Angels Landing is a challenging hike, gaining 1,500' of elevation, but it is not so challenging that the average person can't complete it. We've witnessed all kinds of people successfully complete this hike, and we describe it as a moderately strenuous hike. We do not recommend this hike for those with medical conditions that could be exacerbated by moderate to strenuous physical activity (including steep up and downhills) or those with a fear of heights.

Is Angels Landing dangerous?

While Angels Landing is known for views and thrills, it doesn't come without risk and should be treated as such. There have been 18 confirmed deaths (some reports put the figure close to 20) on the Angels Landing hike. The last death was in March 2021, which was prior to the permit system. We tell you this not to scare you off, but to remind you to proceed with caution. It is estimated that 200,000 people safely hike Angels Landing each year.

2026 National Park Pass Changes: What You Need to Know Before Your Next Adventure

Planning a trip to a U.S. national park in 2026? You’ll want to read this first! Big changes are coming to the America the Beautiful pass and park entry fees, especially if you’re an international visitor. Don’t worry, we’ve broken it down so you know exactly what to expect, how much it will cost, and how to make the most of your park adventures.

Residency-Based Pricing: U.S. vs. International Visitors

One of the biggest updates is the new pricing system based on residency:

America the Beautiful Annual Pass:

U.S. residents can still get the annual "America the Beautiful" pass for $80.
Non-U.S. residents now pay $250 for an annual pass.

Standard Entry Pass (typically 1-7 days)

National Parks locations also offer the option of standard entry passes, typically valid for 1-7 days and range in price.
New in 2026: Non-U.S. residents, age 16 and older, must pay $100 extra per person at 11 of the most popular national parks, including: Acadia, Bryce, Everglades, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain, Sequoia & Kings, Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Zion.

What does this mean for Zion?

U.S. Residents: Private Vehicle $35 (covers all passengers or 4 people if used at pedestrian entrance), good for 7 days or an $80 America the Beautiful Annual Pass.
Non-U.S. Residents: May purchase an America the Beautiful Annual Pass for $250, or they can pay the private vehicle fee of $35 plus $100 for each person 16 and older. Often, the best deal will be to purchase the annual pass, especially if you plan to visit multiple national parks.

General Annual Pass Changes

The beloved America the Beautiful annual pass is getting a 2026 refresh. Digital passes are now fully available, you can buy it online and store it on your phone, or link it to a physical card. If possible it is best practice to purchase a physical card as a majority of that money will stay with that park.

The pass now covers two motorcycles instead of one, which is great if you’re hitting the road on two wheels.

Free Entrance Days are Changing

Free days now apply only to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Some of the traditional days have changed, here is a list of 2026 free days:

June 14: Flag Day
July 3–5: Independence Day weekend
August 25: 110th Birthday of the National Park Service

Hiking The Narrows is one of the most unique experiences in Zion National Park . Instead of a traditional trail, you’ll hike directly in the Virgin River, surrounded by towering canyon walls that soar one thousand feet overhead. Here’s everything you need to know before heading into the river.

Best Time of Year to Hike The Narrows

The Narrows can be hiked year-round (even in the middle of winter), and each season has its pros and cons.

Summer (July–September): One of the most popular times to hike The Narrows due to the ability to cool off in the water, but watch for monsoon storms, which can be a flash flood risk.
Fall (October–November): Considered by locals to be one of the best times to hike. Temperatures are cooler, the water level is lower, and there are fewer crowds.
Winter (December–March): Least busy and with the right gear, can be quite comfortable.
Late Spring (May–June): This is one of the most unpredictable times to hike The Narrows due to snowmelt. Water levels are often high, cold, and fast-moving, and the hike may be closed entirely if flow rates exceed safe limits. The Narrows Bottom Up vs. Top Down

The Narrows can be done starting at "the bottom," which is what we will focus on in this blog post, or from "the top." Hiking from the bottom begins at The Temple of Sinawava and is accessible via the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive and does not require a permit. This is the route a majority of visitors take. Starting at the top begins Chamberlain's Ranch and requires a permit issued by the National Park Service.

The Narrows Hike Play by Play

The Narrows from "the bottom" is an out and back hike and the trail begins at The Temple of Sinawava where you will start on the paved scenic Riverside walk for about 1 mile before you begin the true Narrows hike. One of the first landmarks you'll see is Mystery Falls, followed by House Rock. You've reached Wall Street (some of the narrowest and tallest walls on the hike) once you come to Orderville Junction. At this point, you've hiked ~2.5 miles according to the trail map, but it likely will be closer to 3 to 3.5 miles with zigzagging in the river. From "the bottom" you can continue to hike to Big Springs, but that is as far as you can go without a "Top Down" permit. In The Narrows , the river is the trail. Hikers spend most of the hike walking on uneven rocks and boulders through flowing water, with frequent crossings and varying depths.
