The Narrows Tour FAQs

  • Do I need a permit to hike The Narrows at Zion National Park?

For the classic Bottom-Up Narrows hike (from the Temple of Sinawava), no permit is required.

  • Is The Narrows tour good for beginners?

The Narrows tour is suitable for most guests.  We recommend that guests be comfortable walking at least 4 miles.  The Narrows is not recommended for those with significant balance challenges or those with major hip/knee issues as you'll be hiking on uneven and slippery terrain.

A guided hike is especially beneficial for first-time Narrows hikers; our guides are trained to coach guests through tricky sections and will never push beyond a safe or comfortable pace.

  • Are kids allowed on the guided Narrows tour?

Yes, children are welcome to join The Narrows tours as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The Narrows can be an amazing hike for families, depending on the season, current conditions, and the individual child.  Summer and early fall bring warm temperatures and low water levels. Kids who like the water will have a great time cooling off in the river.  Parents should be cautious during winter and spring since water levels can be high and cold.

Full dry suit options are available at outfitters for those aged 6-8 years old depending on their height and size.

Contact Explore Zion Tours to discuss whether the Narrows is appropriate for your family on your selected date.

  • What time of year is best for a guided Narrows tour?

The Narrows is typically best from late spring through early fall when water levels are safest, and temperatures are warmer. Spring snowmelt can increase river flow, while summer and early fall offer more stable conditions. Your guide will always prioritize safety based on current conditions.

  • Can The Narrows be hiked in the winter?

Yes, The Narrows can be hiked year-round when conditions allow.  During cooler months, Narrows Gear Kits include dry bib pants.  We also recommend bringing gloves, beanies, and jackets, as well as wearing thermal layers under the dry bibs.

  • How cold is the water in The Narrows?

Water temperatures vary by season. In summer, the Virgin River is typically cool and refreshing. In spring and fall, water temperatures are colder, and dry gear may be recommended.

  • How high is the water in The Narrows?

Water level fluctuates greatly from year to year and day to day, depending on many factors such as rainfall and snowmelt. When the river is running below 70 cubic feet per second (CFS), walking is moderately difficult, with knee deep crossings on the slippery and uneven river bottom with frequent pools up to waist deep.

When the current goes above 70 CFS, walking against the current becomes challenging and crossings of mid-thigh deep are frequent with pools that can be chest deep. If the flow goes to over 150 CFS, The Narrows will be closed to all travel. The Narrows also closes when a Flash Flood Warning is issued by the National Weather Service, and remains closed for two hours after the warning is lifted.

Your Explore Zion Tours Guide regularly monitors all conditions to keep you safe and make appropriate recommendations.

  • Is hiking The Narrows in Zion National Park safe?

The Narrows is safe when conditions are right and when hiked responsibly. Flash flooding is the primary concern, which is why guided hikes are valuable. Our guides monitor weather forecasts, river flow data, and park alerts before and during every hike

  • How far in advance should I book a guided Narrows Hike?

The Narrows is one of the most popular hikes in Zion National Park. We recommend booking your guided hike as early as possible, especially for peak season dates from April through October.
