Zion National Park Transportation Guide (2026): Shuttles, Parking & How to Get Around

Planning a trip to Zion National Park? One of the biggest surprises for first-time visitors is that you usually can’t drive your own car into Zion Canyon.

Understanding Zion’s transportation system ahead of time can save you hours of frustration — and dramatically improve your experience.

Here’s everything you need to know about Zion National Park transportation, including the park shuttle, Springdale shuttle, and public transit options from St. George.

Figuring out the transportation and parking in Zion is a challenge enough without planning and coordinating their actual Zion adventures. Many visitors find that starting their trip with a guided Zion National Park tour helps them understand the park, avoid crowds, and experience trails more confidently, especially on a short visit. Why Zion Uses a Shuttle System

Zion National Park protects its famous canyon by limiting vehicle traffic along Zion Canyon Scenic Drive.

During most of the year, private vehicles are not allowed past Canyon Junction.

Instead, visitors use a free shuttle system designed to:

  • Reduce congestion
  • Protect natural resources
  • Improve visitor safety
  • Make accessing trailheads easier

If you plan to hike Angels Landing, The Narrows, Emerald Pools, or Riverside Walk, you will use the shuttle.

Zion Canyon Shuttle (Inside the Park)

The Zion Canyon Shuttle is the primary transportation system inside Zion National Park.

How It Works

  • Runs from the Zion Canyon Visitor Center
  • Stops at all major trailheads and viewpoints
  • Operates seasonally (typically spring through late fall and holidays)
  • Free with park entrance fee
  • Runs every 5-7 minutes
  • Does not stop at all stops up canyon, but does stop at all stops down canyon
  • No reservations are required

Major Shuttle Stops

Popular stops include:

  • Zion Human History Museum
  • Canyon Junction
  • Court of the Patriarchs
  • Zion Lodge
  • The Grotto (Angels Landing)
  • Weeping Rock
  • Big Bend
  • Temple of Sinawava (The Narrows)

Pro Tip: The earlier you board, the better your experience. Lines often form by mid-morning during peak seasons.

More Information

Springdale Shuttle (Town Shuttle)

The Springdale Shuttle connects the town of Springdale directly to the Zion entrance. For many visitors, this is the easiest way to start a Zion day.

Why Use it?

  • Parking inside Zion fills extremely fast, often before 8:00 AM.
  • Runs through most hotels and restaurants
  • Eliminates parking stress
  • Drops you steps from the park entrance
  • Free to ride

Important to know: Fees are associated with parking in Springdale (and they vary). Check out the parking map so you can decide the best place to park.

SunTran Bus: St. George to Zion National Park

Go totally car free in Zion. SunTran operates regional transit connecting St. George to Springdale/Zion.

Why Use it?

  • Go car-free and don't worry about parking
  • Fares are $5 one-way

Can You Ever Drive Inside Zion Canyon?

Yes — but only during limited times.

You may drive Zion Canyon Scenic Drive when:

  • Shuttles are not operating (usually winter: December-February, except the week of Christmas and New Years)
  • You have a lodge reservation at Zion Lodge
  • You hold certain accessibility permits

Otherwise, expect to use the shuttle system.

Zion Parking Tips

Parking is the #1 stress point for Zion visitors.

Here’s how to avoid problems:

  • Arrive before 7:30–8:00 AM
  • Use Springdale parking instead of the visitor center
  • Avoid holiday weekends if possible
  • Plan transportation before your hike day

Many visitors underestimate how busy Zion has become , planning transportation first makes the rest of your trip smooth.
